Understanding Burnout: The Combined Neurotype

  • Concept: Burnout for an AUDHD individual is a state of mental and physical exhaustion resulting from the cumulative load of navigating a world not designed for them. It requires a recovery strategy that addresses both parts of the neurotype.

  • Psychoeducational Point:

    • Cognitive Load: Work stress, social masking, and sensory overwhelm deplete mental energy.

    • The AUDHD Recharge: To recharge the mind, you can't just do nothing (which leads to ADHD boredom). You need to strategically engage both parts of your brain:

      • Feed the ADHD Brain: Needs dopamine. This is achieved through stimulation, novelty, and engaging in interesting activities (e.g., reading new thriller books, choreographing dances).

      • Feed the Autistic Brain: Needs grounding, predictability, and special interests. This is achieved through repetitive, familiar, and soothing activities (e.g., rewatching "The Big Bang Theory," engaging in deep-dive special interests).
